“The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

Contrary to what is often claimed, the source of addictions is not to be found in genes, but the early childhood environment where the neurology of the brain’s reward pathways develops and the where the emotional patterns that lead to addiction are wired into the unconscious. Stress, both then and later in life, creates the predisposition for addictions, whether to drugs, alcohol, nicotine, or to behavioural addictions such as shopping or sex.

Helping the addicted individual requires that we appreciate the function of the addiction in his or her life. More than a disease, the addiction is a response to a distressing life history and life situation. Once we recognize the roots of addiction and the lack it strives (in vain) to fill, we can develop a compassionate approach toward the addict, one that stands the best chance of restoring him or her to wholeness and health.

❀ Things to do on a very bad day ❀

💗 Do not forget to drink water. No matter how bad you feel, simply taking a sip of water is going to make you feel at least a little better!

💗 Although you might not feel like making an effort to prepare something to eat, you need to eat something. Your body needs the energy to get you through the day (even though you might not want to).

💗 No matter how exhausted you feel, taking a shower and changing your clothes will always leave you feeling refreshed.

💗 Open your curtains and windows. It does not have to be for long but just let some fresh air inside your room.

💗 Write down your feelings and thoughts. Do not worry about how it looks, just get everything out of your system. Once everything is on paper, you will feel a little lighter.

💗 Make a list of things that make you happy. It does not have to be a lot, just a few things that exist and make your life a little brighter.

💗 Change your bed sheets if you have not done so in a long time. Similary to taking shower, this will instantly make you feel fresh and a little better.

💗 If you have a lot of things to do, just pick the simplest task on your list and do it. Completing one task can make such a huge difference.

If nothing on that list seems doable for you, please do not feel bad about it. Sometimes spending an entire day (or two or more) in bed is all you can do and that is okay. Sometimes you are here, sometimes the only thing you can do is breathe and let time pass. That does not make you any less of a fighter. You are so brave for sticking around and you can absolutely do this. I love you.

Hot showers are life savers just FYI

“If you love beauty, it’s because beauty lives within you. If you love art, it’s because you are creative. If it wakes up your heart, a receptor for it already exists within you. Your soul is drawn to the things that will help you unfold your most glorious expression. Give in.”
